Buying reviews is the roofing industry’s worst-kept secret, and most “best of” lists just rank whoever paid to be there. We didn’t.
We pulled one hundred and thirteen roofing companies across Austin and read their reviews the way a homeowner about to sign a twenty-thousand-dollar contract should. Not the headline number. The pattern underneath it.
Why reviews and not Google’s own ranking? Because Google’s ranking is a moving target that depends on where you’re standing when you search. Type “Austin roofing” from your kitchen and you get one order. Type it from across town, and you get a different one. The results are built for whoever’s nearest, not for who’s actually best, so search order is no way to judge a roofer. Reviews don’t move with you. A star rating and a review count read the same no matter where you search from, which is why that’s the honest thing to measure.
Two things we kept running into, and you should watch for them too.
A roofing company with fifteen hundred five-star reviews and not a single complaint. That’s unheard of. Real work has bad days. When every review is perfect, those reviews have been managed, not earned.
A company with six hundred reviews and no website. Also unheard of. A business that’s done six hundred roofs has a website, because a website pays for itself at that scale. No website means something doesn’t add up.
So we dropped those. What’s left is the honest list. Real star spreads. A few fours. The occasional one-star from a hard day.

- One company with 286 reviews showed up as two duplicate listings in the scrape, a red flag for a spam or duplicate Google profile.
